National Park Volunteer Day

On Saturday, May 12 a crew of volunteers participated in the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park ‘s Annual Volunteer Day by working on projects for Ernestina.

A new area for storage has opened up for Ernestina's equipment and the first task was to move the gangways and other items out of the Interpreter's Shed.

Most of the volunteers then set to removing the plastic winter cover.

It took a big reach....

Cristiano and others used ingenuity and duct tape to extend their reach.

Once the plastic was off the Lauan battens were removed

Annie lead a crew in the Interpreter's Shed organizing the display materials for telling Ernestina's story at summer festivals.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy Cadets Anthony and Henry and Alum Melissa found a new use for their skills!

The cadets were very enthusiastic about Ernestina and planned to carry the news back to Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

New Bedford Mayor Mitchell joined in

Volunteers enjoyed an All American Cookout provided by Whaling History Alliance, the Park's Friends group.
