AHA! Fire and Ice January 2012

The theme of January’s AHA! Night in New Bedford was Fire & Ice, a natural connection for Ernestina.  Barbara Burgo and Chuck Smiler set up SEMA’s display board with the help of Annie McDowell at the National Park Visitors Center to explain that “SHE’S BEEN THERE.” The Effie M. Morrissey sailed in the Arctic ice for twenty years under Captain Bob Bartlett, sometimes at great peril to the ship and crew.  Captain Henriques Mendes took her to Cape Verde where she was home-ported on the island of Fogo.  Fogo means fire. The Pico do Fogo volcano erupted during 1951 when the Ernestina was in Cape Verde.  Learn more in the Ernestina Timeline on the pre-2005 Ernestina web site.
