The New Bedford Harbor Sea Chantey Chorus will make landfall with a boatload of musical treasures at the Four Corners Arts Center. The 35-member chorus began in 2001 to sing and enjoy music of our local maritime heritage and has since conducted a voyage of exploration leading to many historical and musical connections.
Their repertoire, both lusty and melodic, reflects our great maritime culture, collected from a variety of domestic ports of call and coastal cultures from across the oceans, echoes Yankee whalermen, fisherfolk and the global merchant fleet with additional, historic and contemporary songs from far-flung sources. This year’s program also reflects New England’s musical and poetic ties to Old England with a selection of tunes first heard in the 17 th and 18 th centuries, to include Sir Thomas Ravenscroft’s “We Be Three Poor Mariners,” Vaughn-Williams’ arrangement of the traditional “Down Among the Dead Men” and an 18 th century drinking song, “The Roast Beef of Old England.”  Accompaniment features recorders, violin, bass viol, accordion, concertina, and various percussion played by Chorus members. Special guest, Wendell Bishop, will join this ensemble playing the serpent, the 18 th century precursor of our modern tuba.
