Title: Mate
The Mate:
- assists the in developing and implementing
operational and programmatic plans.
- is responsible for the education and safety
of a watch during the course of a program and
whenever underway.
- maintains, preserves, and updates the
navigational equipment, publications, charts,
and instruments.
- assists in the management of personnel in the
maintenance of the ship.
Education
Minimum of high school diploma.
Skills
Interpersonal skills important. Knowledge of
traditional sailing vessel maintenance important.
Experience
Minimum three years experience with organizations
providing educational and public programming. Minimum
one year experience on traditionally rigged sailing
vessels in supervisory role.
License, Endorsements and Certificates
- A valid Mate of Near Coastal Auxiliary Sail
Vessels of 100 Gross Tons (Ocean License
preferred).
- CPR certification.
- Firefighting certificate preferred.
During the sailing
season from April through October substantial amounts
of time will be spent on the ship underway for days
at a time in coastal New England waters. Room and
board are provided on the ship when underway. The
successful candidate will report to the Schooner
Ernestina office at 89 North Water Street in New
Bedford when not on the Schooner Ernestina underway.
