Deckhand Job Description

Job Summary

  • The Deckhand assists the Mate in the safe operation and management of a watch.
  • The Deckhand assists in the educational program aboard and dockside as specified by the Mate.
  • The Deckhand is involved in all aspects of traditional sailing vessel maintenance, repair, and operation as directed by the Mate.
  • The Deckhand provides tours of the vessel to visitors.
  • The Deckhand works directly with participants of the watch in their instruction.
  • The Deckhand reports directly to the Mate of the watch.

Education

  • Minimum of high school diploma.

Skills

Interpersonal skills and educational experience important. Knowledge of traditional sailing vessel maintenance and operation preferred.

Experience

Minimum one year experience with organizations providing educational and public programming.

License, Endorsements and Certificates

CPR certification

During the sailing season from April through October substantial amounts of time will be spent on the ship underway for days at a time in coastal New England waters. Room and board are provided on the ship when underway. The successful candidate will report to the Schooner Ernestina office at 89 North Water Street in New Bedford when not on the Schooner Ernestina underway.
